Student Rules


 

Requirements and Eligibility

v     Students must be between 14 and 18 years old as of January 1 of the current competition season.  Exceptions will be made for former IDS students or for younger students with a year of debate experience

v     No prior debate experience required

v     Applicants must be home educated.  They are not eligible if the public school district receives any funding for their participation in public school enrichment programs

v     All students are strongly encouraged to be affiliate members of the NCFCA, but this is not a requirement. Affiliate status is necessary if students plan to participate in official NCFCA tournaments.  Visit: www.ncfca.org

v     When competing at tournaments, all students on the IDS Network are urged to register for the debate section of the tournament under the club name IDS

v     Space is limited

 

Behavior

v     Discussions and debates are to be conducted in a professional, Christian manner

      v     Patience with technical glitches in the online format is expected

v     IDS Network reserves the right to remove any student from the network if rules are breached or for any other reason deemed necessary by IDS staff

 

General

v     All debates on the IDS Network must be moderated by a mentor, parent judge, or guest judge. IDS Network is not responsible for unmoderated debates

v     Weekly meetings will be set by IDS staff and mentors at a regular time (Subject to change on a needs basis, as tournaments may conflict.)

 

Required resources

v     A computer and internet connection capable of running Teamspeak 2 Client software (a free, internet telephony program).  To download, go to www.goteamspeak.com and click on “Quick Start: Download Now" on the right side of the screen.  Download the Teamspeak 2 Client software.  DO NOT download the beta version.  (At this page you can also check the sytem requirements.) 

v     Some combination of microphone and speakers or computer headset with microphone (headset preferred) ($12-$50)

v     E-mail capability

v     A printer (strongly advised)

v     The Red Book and the Red Book Student Workbook (Available at www.speechsupplies.com)

 

 

Responsibilities

v     All assignments are to be completed by the set deadline. Further, all debaters are expected to be present and punctual for all discussion groups and debate rounds. 

      v     Mentors will assign and check homework

           

Cost:

v     Administration Fee: $25 (Family Discount: fee for additional siblings is $15 each.) 

v     Lincoln-Douglas Debate (the red book): $30 (purchase at Training Minds Ministry)

v     Headset with mic: $12-50 (purchase on your own)

 

v  NCFCA Affiliation (Recommended, but not required)
